Tired of eating yeast bread? Here is an instant bread recipe, which does not require any yeast. It is a traditional Irish dish and very easy to make. This Irish soda bread is still widespread in Ireland! Generally the soda bread is a combination of baking soda, flour and buttermilk. When you mix baking soda with buttermilk this reaction causes to form little bubbles to your batter and it helps the bread to expand. In this recipe buttermilk is the important ingredient which cannot be substituted and if you don't have buttermilk, below I have mentioned the recipe for buttermilk. This recipe will also be helpful for the people who don't eat yeast bread and rely on instant bread recipe.
How about making this classic bread healthy ? I have used whole wheat flour in this recipe. If wish to eat white bread then just replace whole wheat flour with all purpose flour with same measurements. This bread has a golden color on the crust with dense tight crumbs and also leavening to the bread comes by the reaction of baking soda and buttermilk.
Irish soda bread is good at room temperature and can be stored for 2 days. The bread is best when served warm. The Irish soda bread can be enjoyed with variety of options. These loaf slices can be served with butter, jam, soup or stew.
What if I don't have buttermilk?
No worries, here I am using 2 cups of buttermilk, just replace it with 2 cups of milk and 2 tablespoons of vinegar/ lemon juice. In a bowl take 2 cups of milk and add 2 tablespoons of vinegar/ lemon juice to it and leave it for 10-15 minutes, the milk will curdle. This is how you can make buttermilk easily.
Baking Time : 50 minutes.
Total Time : 60 Minutes.
Yield : 1 Loaf.
Ingredients
Whole wheat flour - 4 Cups.
Buttermilk - 2 Cups.
Baking soda - 2 tsp.
Sugar - 2 tsp.
Melted butter - 1/4th Cup.
Salt to taste.
Procedure
1 Preheat the oven to 200 degree Celsius and line a round baking pan with parchment paper.
2 In a medium sized mixing bowl whisk together whole wheat flour, baking soda, sugar and salt.
3 Now add in buttermilk and butter to it. Mix everything till the dough comes together.
4 Make sure you do not overwork on dough.
5 Once the dough has come together, make a ball out of it and then press the top slightly down. Make a 1 inch deep cross on the top and then place the dough on the baking pan.
6 Place the dough into the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes at 200 degree Celsius.
7 After 20 minutes reduce the temperature to 180 degree Celsius and continue baking it for more 30 minutes.
8 Let the bread cool for 15 minutes before you eat.
